Anyone vaguely familiar with methods of bringing traffic to your website will have heard of search engine optimization (SEO) and pay per click (PPC) advertising. While both methods do in fact bring you traffic, they are fairly different in nature. Put simply, SEO involves various techniques, such as keywords, to increase your search engine ranking. PPC, on the other hand, involves paying for ads that appear on the search engines. When you look at them in more detail, however, there are even more things to consider when choosing between SEO vs PPC.

Where SEO and PPC Links Are Displayed

One of the big differences between SEO and PPC is where your link will be displayed on a page. Google, for example, will display several paid advertisements at the top of the search results in a box labeled “ads.” This is where your PPC links will appear, while any links gained through SEO will appear immediately below them. This means that most viewers will see PPC ads before they see links gained from SEO.

When it comes to the effects on traffic of SEO vs PPC, it becomes a bit more complicated. Generally speaking, starting a PPC campaign will give you more immediate results, as you don’t have to go through and edit your current website or add new pages to it. On the other hand, people are much more likely to click on organic links from SEO than paid advertisements from PPC. This means that while PPC is a quick solution, SEO is actually usually more effective in the long run.

Time Needed to Implement SEO Vs PPC

As mentioned, it is much faster to see results with PPC compared with SEO. That is because in order to set up SEO, you will need to optimize such items ascontent and code, build up a base of links, get authorship, and do many other things. All of this generally takes a significant amount of time. If you are short on time, PPC is a much better option as you usually don’t have to make any changes to your website. Instead, you will simply pay for ads to appear when people search for relevant keywords.

Cost Differences between SEO and PPC

If you are simply looking at the upfront cost of SEO vs PPC, then PPC is always going to be more expensive. That is because you could do most of the work for SEO by yourself while you have to actually pay for PPC, hence the name: pay per click. One thing to consider, however, is that if you do opt for SEO, you will have to overhaul your website and do other things that take a great deal of time. You may also end up hiring an SEO professional to help. When all is said and done, however, SEO methods of generating traffic are usually cheaper than PPC ads.

Choosing SEO Vs PPC

You can use the information above to figure out when to choose SEO vs PPC, but in general there are some situations when one option is best. SEO methods are ideal when you want consistent results that you won’t have to keep paying for, want an authority site, or simply want to increase your website’s value. PPC, on the other hand, is better if you need immediate results or to reach a specific targeted audience, your website isn’t good for SEO, you have a time-sensitive offer, or you simply want to dominate the search results.
