glossary of SEO terms

This glossary of SEO terms should make understanding SEO a bit easier.

The internet has billions of pages on it, but not all of them have the information that a person is looking for. You can find anything you want online, but that doesn’t mean that you want to. A search engine gives us a way to quickly look for keywords and content without having to sift through unhelpful pages. How does the internet pick results among the billions of pages? More importantly, which pages have a better chance of popping up on the front page where they have the highest chance of being clicked? The answer to everything lies in the SEO results.

It’s much easier to visualize this if you pretend that you are a video rental clerk and are helping a number of different customers. Some of these people will want a comedy movie, while others are looking for action and others still want something family friendly. It would be difficult for you to know the contents of each film and give good suggestions, especially if you want to give them quality results. In order to accomplish this, you would have to set up a system that lets you quickly search your catalog and see what best matches the requirements. In much the same way, a search engine scans the entire internet for results in a matter of seconds to give you the best results.

When you have a website that meets the needs of the user, the chances of your page popping up on the front page of searches increases dramatically. In other words, the higher up in the chain you are, the better chance you have at being noticed. Studies have shown that most people don’t make it past the third page of suggestions, so being in the top is vital.

There are some certain aspects that can help you raise your SEO ranking in a natural manner. Some of these key ingredients to success are:

  • Keywords
  • Title
  • Credible links (hyperlinks and anchor links)
  • Reputation

It’s important to know what to do and what to avoid because taking the wrong steps may end up penalizing you instead of helping you. There are certain algorithms in place to determine what content is genuine and what is just there to pull in matches. At MacRAE’s Marketing, we have a firm understanding of what SEO is and how to use it in an advantageous manner. No matter what type of business you run, we can help you get noticed.
